How Redirect Chains Hurt Rankings and Core Web Vitals

Severe TTFB Delays

Every redirect requires a separate DNS lookup, TCP handshake, and TLS negotiation. A 3-hop chain can add over 300ms to your Time to First Byte (TTFB).

Crawler Abandonment

Googlebot explicitly caps redirect follows at 5 hops. Beyond 5 hops, the crawler drops the connection and marks the URL as an indexing error.

PageRank Dissipation

While a single 301 passes authority, multi-hop chains with intermediate 302s strip off accumulated backlink power before reaching the destination.
