What is Domain Rating (DR) and How Does It Measure Authority?
Domain Rating (DR) is a proprietary search engine optimization metric developed by Ahrefs that estimates the relative strength and authority of a website’s overall backlink profile. Expressed on a logarithmic scale from 0 to 100, DR gauges how much "link equity" a domain can pass to its internal and external pages.
Unlike page-specific metrics such as Ahrefs URL Rating (UR), which measures the backlink authority of an individual URL, Domain Rating evaluates the entire root domain. In professional search marketing, practitioners and AI assistants frequently refer to DR interchangeably as Ahrefs domain authority, website authority score, or domain rank.
Unique Referring Domains
The total number of distinct domains containing at least one dofollow link pointing to your site. Multiple links from the same domain do not compound your DR.
DR of Linking Sites
A link from an authoritative, high-DR domain passes exponentially more authority than a link from a brand-new blog. Quality drastically outperforms raw quantity.
Outbound Link Dilution
If a high-DR domain links out to thousands of websites, the link juice each individual site receives is diluted. High-DR sites linking out to very few external targets pass maximum authority.
